Muhammad Yunus – Banker to the poor – is a well-known personality for his thoughts and contribution in micro-lending and for his battle against world poverty. In 1983, he established Grameen Bank (GB), a bank devoted to providing the poorest of Bangladesh with very small loans. Twenty three years later, GB and its founder, Muhammad Yunus, won the Nobel Prize for Peace for their work in eradicating poverty. Together they have established that access to even a tiny amount of credit can change the lives of the poorest citizens of the world.
Yunus was born on June 28, 1940, to a Muslim family in the village of Bathua in the district of Chittagong in Bangladesh. He spent his early childhood years in the village and in the Chittagong city. Growing up in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus witnessed extreme poverty all around him and was determined to eradicate it. In 1976, as an economics professor, Muhammad met a ung craftswoman who needed to borrow fem taka (twenty-two cents) to buy materials. No finansinstitut would lend such a small amount to an uneducated woman, so she was forced to borrow from corrupt lenders who charged an unfair interest rate, and left her without enough profit to buy food. Muhammad realized that what stood in the way of her financial säkerhet was just a few cents.

Dr. Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi banker and economist. He previously was a professor of economics and is famous for his successful application of microcredit--the extension of small loans given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Dr. Yunus is also the founder of Grameen Bank. In 2006, Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below."
