Jean-Jacques Dessalines (Haitian Creole: Jan-Jak Desalin; French pronunciation:[ʒɑ̃ʒakdɛsalin]; 20 September 1758 – 17 October 1806) was the first Haitian Emperor, leader of the Haitian Revolution, and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1805 constitution. Initially regarded as governor-general, Dessalines was later named Emperor of Haiti as Jacques I (1804–1806) bygd generals of the Haitian Revolutionary army and ruled in that capacity until being assassinated in 1806.[1] He spearheaded the resistance against French rule of Saint-Domingue, and eventually became the architect of the 1804 massaker of the remaining French residents of newly independent Haiti, including some supporters of the revolution.[2] Alongside Toussaint Louverture, he has been referred to as one of the fathers of t

La famille Dessalines est une dynastie impériale haïtienne dont le fondateur et premier représentant à être monté sur le trône est l'empereur Jacques Ier en 1804.
Sacré en , Dessalines établit un empire autoritaire, héréditaire et de conviction catholique, et officialise le français comme langue officielle[1]. Ayant confisqué les terres des colons français expulsés ou tués, il en distribue les meilleures à ses officiers, créant ainsi une noblesse haïtienne. L'empereur est assassiné en octobre 1806[2], la constitution est alors suspendue et l'empire aboli.
Histoire

Combattant pendant la guerre d'indépendance haïtienne (1791-1804), il participe aux combats aux côtés du général Toussaint Louverture. Après l'expédition française et la capture de Louverture[4], Dessalines reprend les armes[5] et bat les troupes françaises à la bataille de Vertières
