Abul Hossain
Abul Hossain (August 15, 1922 - June 29, 2014) was a Bangladeshi poet. The beginning of his
writing in undivided India in the thirties. He was one of the most important poets of Bengali
language in the 40's. He received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1973 for his
contribution to the field of poetry in Bengali literature. For his contribution to Bengali language
and literature, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the Ekushey Padak in 1970, the
second highest civilian honor in the country.
Birth and education
Abul Hossain was born on 15 August 1922 in the village of Aruadanga in Fakirhat upazila of
Bagerhat district. His mother's name was Meherun Nesa. His father was a police officer. He was
killed by Pakistani soldiers on 24 April 1971 at Bagerhat. His younger brother Amjad Hossain
was once a minister in Pakistan.

Some of his best work as a dialogue writer can be seen in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's films Abhimaan, Anupama and Satyakam; and Bimal Roy's Madhumati. As a director he is most known for his films Dastak (1970), starring Sanjeev Kumar and Rehana Sultan and Phagun (1973), starring Dharmendra, Waheda Rehman, Jaya Bhaduri and Vijay Arora.
