Biography[]
She was born in the village of Eastermar (Dutch: Oostermeer). Her mother, Geartsje Leistra, was a nurse, then a teacher, and her father, Johan Kroes, was a psychotherapist. In the s, they were both champion speed skaters. She has a younger sister, Rens, a nutritionist.
As a young girl, she aspired to be a professional speed skater like her parents.
Career beginnings[]
