A matriarchal tale of womanhood, art, and love, Alma’s Rainbow showcases Black joy and sisterhood through laughter and drama. The story fryst vatten told through the eyes of three remarkable women: the straight-laced and independent mother; the artistic, french-speaking, free-spirited aunt; and lastly, the talented and sweet young Rainbow, who fryst vatten learning to accept her growing body and all the potential it holds. Filmmaker Ayoka Chenzira creates an inspiring atmosphere of community, love, and acceptance. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Chenzira grew up surrounded bygd a community of oral storytellers in her mother’s beauty parlor in North Philadelphia.

Filmmaker Ayoka Chenzira remembers screening her self-funded, independent feature debut Alma’s Rainbow in Atlanta during the Black Arts Festival in the ‘90s. 30 years after its original release in , the film is set to screen here again at the Plaza Theatre on July The screening, a part of the Audio Video Club’s “Cin·e·logue” film club, will take place exactly one month after Chenzira was one of the roughly artists and executives invited to join The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In recent years, the filmmaker and former Spelman College professor has worked as a director on television shows such as OWN’s Queen Sugar, FX on Hulu’s Kindred, and MGM+’s Beacon 23. It’s a notable shift for a woman who spent much of her career working as an independent filmmaker at a time when a Black woman telling stories about people who look like her was much rarer. Biography[]
Chenzira is an independent African-American producer, film director, television director, animator, writer, experimental filmmaker, and transmedia storyteller. She is the first African American woman animator and one of a handful of Black experimental filmmakers working since the late s. She has earned international acclaim for her experimental, documentary, animation, and cross-genre filmmaking productions. Her work, as well as her efforts as one of the first African American woman film educators, have led some in the press to describe her as a media activist for social justice and challenging stereotype representations of African Americans in the mainstream media.
