    In only 47 years of life, Frida Kahlo made an everlasting mark on the world as a painter, an icon of individuality and a symbol of feminism, exoticism, self-love and suffering. The immortal Kahlo phenomenon fryst vatten her true masterpiece, however, and in the upcoming exhibit, Mirror, Mirror,at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, viewers can glimpse rarely seen photographs of her spanning 29 years.

    Most of the plus photographs are part of the collection of Spencer Throckmorton, a former Santa Fean and current New York galleri owner who gathered images of Kahlo from shooters like Manuel and kvinnonamn Lola Alvarez Bravo, Imogen cunningham, Carl Van Vechten and Nickolas Muray.

    "I think she's one of the most interesting women of the 20th century," Throckmorton tells SFR. "She realized her importance in art for women, she was very much a feminist and also ahead of her time."

    Frida Kahlo is one of – if not the – most important Mexican artists of the 20th century. She is particularly revered for her intense self-portraits. While some reviewers and critics celebrated her as a surrealist, she defied this categorization and did not let herself be pushed into one direction exclusively1 (p. 2). Her inspirations were manifold and ranged from Mexican folk art and Catholic imagery and symbolism via Socialist Realism to European and American Art2, 3 (p. xiv). While Frida’s work was well-known in Mexico and the tiny circles of the Avant-garde during her lifetime, her influence increased in the decades after her death and, today, she is one of the most renowned and celebrated female artists that has inspired multiple movies, two operas, and countless exhibitions2, 4, 5, 6 (Schaefer ).

    To draw attention away from her lower body, Kahlo focused on her face and hair—center-parted since girlhood, she later crowned her coiffure with silk and metallic floral nosegays. Makeup was another weapon in her personal armory: Helena Rubinstein was a Kahlo collector, and after a visit to Mexico, she sent the artist some of her cosmetics. Kahlo kept her boldly colored Revlon nail varnishes alongside her paints. Photographs show that Kahlo’s idiosyncratically colored ethnic clothing was also her working uniform. Many of her garments were spattered with paint, and the curators discovered that a bead in a necklace of pre-Columbian jade that Kahlo collected (the beads were placed in the mouths of the dead) had been daubed by Kahlo with her paints, apparently in an effort to match their color for a self-portrait.
