Multi-talented Jason Jordan Segel was born in Los Angeles, California, where he was raised by his parents, Jillian (Jordan), a homemaker, and Alvin Segel, a lawyer. His mother is of English, Scottish, and Irish ancestry, and his father is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent. He was educated at St. Matthew's Parish School in Pacific Palisades, before moving on to Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. During his education he showed an interest in acting and often performed in plays at the Palisades Playhouse.
His major break came in 1999, when he was cast as Nick Andopolis in Judd Apatow's well-regarded series Freaks and Geeks (1999). Further TV and film roles followed, notably in How I Met Your Mother (2005) and Knocked Up (2007). Jason Jordan Segel (SEE-gəl; born January 18, 1980) is an American actor and writer. American actor, screenwriter and producer best known for his role as Marshall Eriksen in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014), as well as for his work with director and producer Judd Apatow on the television series Freaks and Geeks (1999-2000) and Undeclared (2001-2002), and for the critically successful comedies in which he has starred, written, and produced.
In Forgetting Sarah Marshall, a 2008 film he wrote and Apatow produced, Segel's lead character writes a "Dracula" musical performed by puppets. He also appeared in the most prominent scene containing full frontal nudity in the film, a rare display by an American Hollywood actor.
Segel dated his Freaks and Geeks co-star Linda Cardellini for five years following the show's cancellation. He dated Michelle Williams from 2012 to 2013. From December 2013 to April 2021, Segel dated photographer Alexis Mixter.
