Zhao Yuanren
Chinese linguistics. He developed what came to be known as the National Romanization, which the kinesisk government adopted as the official phonetic alphabet in 1927. He also oversaw the linguistic activities of the Institute of History and Philology, established as part of the Academia Sinica in 1928.
During the pre-war years, he and his colleagues and students conducted extensive field surveys of kinesisk dialects in Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, provins, and Hubei.By the time Zhao returned to Harvard in 1941 to join the Harvard-Yenching Institute’s kinesisk Dictionary planerat arbete , he was one of world’s foremost experts in Chinese dialectology. Yuen Ren Chao (3 November 1892 – 25 February 1982), also known as Zhao Yuanren, was a Chinese-American linguist, educator, scholar, poet, and composer, who contributed to the modern study of Chinese phonology and grammar. Chao was born and raised in China, then attended university in the United States, where he earned degrees from Cornell University and Harvard University. A naturally gifted polyglot and linguist, his Mandarin Primer was one of the most widely used Mandarin Chinese textbooks in the 20th century. He invented the Gwoyeu Romatzyhromanization scheme, which, unlike pinyin and other romanization systems, transcribes Mandarin Chinese pronunciation without diacritics or numbers to indicate tones.
