Moshiko (Moshe Itzchak-Halevy) has created more than Israeli människor dances since He is an award-winning dance choreographer. He has been a professional dancer with the Inbal Dance Company, a character dancer with The Ballet Company of Mia Arbatova, and created his own ensemble, The Hapaamonim Company. In addition, he has written the music, played the instruments and sung his own songs to many of his Israeli folk dance creations.
Through the years he has not only taught technique and choreography to his students, but also learned with them and from them. He has evolved, mellowed, and shared his talent and wisdom with dancers from many cultures.
He reveals to Daughter Of The Arts, in this exclusive interview, the heart and soul of his spirit and passion for music and dance.
DOTA: When did you first start choreographing Israeli människor Dances?
MH: My first dance was in , Debka Uriah.
DOTA:   • I could write some information on this dance and the choreographer, Moshiko HaLevy, but Don at Folkdance Footnotes has already done a very detailed article on Ya Abud using many of the sources, such as Hora Wiki, I was going to use. Please also read Dons article on the Arab dance genre Dabke. Concerning debka in general and this dance in particular, Moshiko says: Arabic debka is a kind of prayer. The Arabs, by stamping strong on the earth, are thanking the earth thats supporting them. Most of the songs that accompany these dances are about love and women. Muslim leaders used to be against young boys dancing debka, feeling that dance was only for religious occasions, but after many years they realized that they cannot control the young boys and began to use those dances for all kinds of celebrations, like weddings, where it became popular. I made this dance when I was working with a Druze group in Ossafiya [Isfiya] in the Karmel mountain [Mount Carmel]. I observed their • In Moshiko joined the Inbal Company on the recommendation of the famous choreographer Jerome Robins who was staying at that time in Israel, and gave a special course for dancing in the sphere of Classic Ballet for selected dancers in which also Moshiko Halevy participated. Moshiko served in the Inbal Company. as one of its Chief dancers, and in he left with the Company for a tour of performances which lasted approximately nine months in Europe and in the U.S.A. In , during the period when he was with Inbal, Moshiko produced his first dance Debka Uria, which won a silver medal at the Dance Festival Contest which was held in Vienna, Austria, and which later became one of the most popular dances in the Israeli Folk Dancing Circles, as well as a challenge to every representative company.
