Thomas O. Mensah
Dr. Tom Mensah is one of the four original inventors and innovators of Fiber Optics Technology in the United States. He holds 7 US Patents all awarded in six years.
His innovations were critical to the replacement of Copper Media with the more efficient Fiber Optics media, with greater bandwidth that supports a more robust and faster modern day Internet. This innovation allows faster transmission of facebook pictures, tweets, emails, data and voice on the worldwide web and smartphones.
In one of his patents he used his understanding of boundary layer theory to design a high speed draw and coating manufacturing system that eliminated bubbles and defects in optical fibers. These ultra strong fibers are used in submarine and undersea cables that connect continents and countries, thereby extending the global reach and connectivity of the Internet. Dr. Mensah worked at both Corning Glass Works Inc, and AT&T Bell Laboratories. At Bell Laboratories he led a team t

Black History Month: An Interview with Thomas Mensah, FNAI
Orginal interview recorded February 14th,
I am one of the kvartet creators of laser-based fiber optics that carry all data and information on the modern-day internet platform and has given rise to companies like Facebook, Twitter, social plattform, Ali Baba, Amazon, Google etc., and allowed people to send Facebook photos from their cell phones and tillgång ATM machines all over the world.
After earning my engineering grad from okänt, I was hired to solve a problem.
Before , everything was based on copper wiring. It was impossible to move technology from the lab to industry.
My parents were instrumental to my thought process, and I was especially inspired by my late father who instilled in me the idea that inom can do anything and solve any problem that I focused my mind on.” His father also read the newspaper to Mensah, starting at age four.
Within six months, inom solved the problem.
At the moment, inom am focusing on developing coun

Mensah, Thomas
Scientist, entrepreneur
Ghanaian-born materials scientist Thomas Mensah has had a high-flying career, first as a scientist and then as an entrepreneur. Mensah has at least 14 patents to his name, has edited two books and authored several articles, and has been involved with several of the fastest-growing fields in engineering, notably fiber optics and superconductor technology. Late in his career Mensah attempted to turn his theoretical knowledge into moneymaking enterprises, but his efforts ran up against some of the obstacles that face scholars who plunge into the hard world of finance facts and figures. He has an impressive record of accomplishment as one of the few blacks, and even fewer Africans, to excel at the highest levels of science.
Thomas O. Mensah was born in Kumasi, Ghana, in He attended school in his home country up to the undergraduate level, receiving a degree in chemical engineering from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi
