    It’s not often that you get to do something that scares the living daylights out of you, but is also extremely exciting at the same time. The thing that makes Taekwon-Do so fantastic, for me at least, is that it presents so many opportunities to experience this juxtaposition of emotions.

    My story takes us 8,km from Auckland, New Zealand to Tokyo, Japan. In fact, this will be a journey through time and space, as this happened in early January of this year.

    I met up with a friend, Dane Canton (III dan, Southern Cross Taekwon-Do Academy), who currently resides in Hokkaido, Japan, because I had this harebrained idea to take a flight from Seoul to Japan to train with Taekwon-Do legend, Master Hwang Su-il (VII dan, Hwarang Hwang Taekwon-Do Club).

    Did I used this character for pose practice? Yes anyways, Hwoarang is one of my favourite character in TEKKEN simple because of his fighting style which is Taekwondo, which I am a practitioner for some time (though I'm not as active anymore). Although, his style is mostly from the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) as he's performing his tul(like the Karate's Kata) named after him, the Hwarang tul. I'm more of the Olympic-style Taekwondo, the World Taekwondo Federation (abbreviated as WT these days). Does not matter though, as those Taekwondo fighting style Hwoarang used is so crisp in a fighting game, which makes sense since he's motion captured by Hwang Su Il, an ITF champion for TEKKEN 3, where Hwoarang debuted.
