    DeGruy was born October 16, , in Los Angeles, California. She was the youngest of four children born to working class parents, Oscar DeGruy, a truck driver and Nellie Parker DeGruy, a stay-at-home mom.&#;Her parents grew up in Louisiana. Joy's maternal great-grandparents were from Belize.[1]
