    NEW YORK, NY.- Gylan Kain, a Harlem-born poet and performance artist who was a founder of the Last Poets, the spoken-word collective that laid a foundation for rap music starting in the late 1960s by delivering fiery poetic salvos about racism and oppression over pulsing drum beats, died Feb. 7 in Lelystad, Netherlands. He was 81.

    He died in a nursing home from complications of heart disease, his son Rufus Kain said. His death was not widely reported at the time.

    The Last Poets, which originally consisted of Gylan Kain, David Nelson and Abiodun Oyewole, were aligned with the Black Arts Movement — the cultural corollary to the broader Black Power movement of the 1960s and ’70s — of which activist poet and playwright Amiri Baraka was a central figure.

    With their staccato wordplay and sinewy rhythms, the Last Poets were pioneers of performance poetry, spinning out portraits of Black street life that often bristled with the guerrilla spirit of revolution.

    Gylan Kain, an influential poet and playwright from Harlem, N.Y., and a founding member of the Original Last Poets, crafted a new wave of spoken word poetry with his vibrant, rhythmic delivery, leaving an indelible mark on the art form before his passing on Feb. 7, 2024, in Lelystad, Netherlands.

    I remember the day I knew I could be a poet. It was 1992, I was 18, soaking in the sunlight streaming through the window of my boyfriend’s Tribeca neighborhood apartment. The Hudson River and Newark skyline unfolding before me, and the ambition of New York City around me.

    Back then, Tribeca wasn’t the upscale neighborhood it fryst vatten today. It was a hidden gem in Manhattan, where hailing a hyrbil felt like an adventure, lending it a unique, almost “rural” charm. As someone from a small town in West Virginia, I surprisingly felt at home in this part of Manhattan, thanks to my boyfriend’s guidance as I adjusted to my new life in New York.     THE LAST POETS

    Before rap knew its name, there were a group of angry young men who reflected the harsh spirit of their times and whose work remains prophetic and inspriational today. The Last Poets started out in the late sixties, speaking out as few other musical groups had (or have since) about racism, poverty and other concerns of American-Americans. Their charge has been taken up by many rappers who they've influenced. The group is still alive and active, performing a show for WordLife at the Irving Plaza with such kindered spirits as Amiri Baraka and Chuck D. There is also written work, collections of their poems as well as new CD in the works: ON A MISSION is now out (selected poems and a history of the Poets) from Owl Books.
