Establishment and Success of the Breguet Brand
In 1775, at the age of 28, Breguet established the "Breguet" watch brand out of a new studio in Quai de l'Horloge on Cité Island in the Seine River in Paris. In the same year he married Cécile Marie L'Huillier, the daughter of a bourgeois family. Their first child, Antoine Louis, was born the next year. Breguet's domestic happiness soon proved to be ephemeral. In the next few years his second and third children died of illness, and in 1780 his wife Cécile passed away at the young age of 28. Breguet suffered from deep sadness and was never to marry again. Yet just when his family was dying, Breguet invented the "Perpétuelle," a watch he had worked on through long years of study. The Perpétuelle was the first step of what was to become a glorious career in watchmaking.

Few watchmakers have left their mark on the world of horology like the great Abraham-Louis Breguet. He is of course the namesake founder of the Breguet brand, and many of his innovations and creations are still used in watchmaking today. In this article, I take a look at the life of this great watchmaker and some of his incredible achievements.

Widely considered as one of the greatest watchmakers of all time, the legacy of Abraham-Louis Breguet has survived almost 200 years since he passed in 1823, and doubtless will continue long into the future. Many of his innovations are still in use today, and when you factor in that Breguet lived in the 18th and early 19th Century, it serves to stand his achievements in even greater stead.

France's most eminent horologist, Abraham-Louis Breguet revolutionised the design, techniques and image of watch and clockmaking. His work was luxurious, expensive and of superlative quality. He was appointed watchmaker to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, and later to Napoleon. He was also patronised by the Tzars of Russia, the English royal family, the Queen of Naples and of Spain and the high aristocracy. Breguet time pieces can be found worldwide, including London's Biritish Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Guildhall and Buckingham Palace and in Paris at the Conservatoire des Arts et Metiers.
Breguet was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. In 1762 he travelled to Paris, serving an apprenticeship to a watchmaker in Versailles; he may also have worked for F. Berthoud (1727-1807) or for J. A.
