Brigadier General James D. Campbell assumed duties as the 39th Adjutant General of the Maine National Guard and Commissioner of the Maine Department of Defense, Veterans and Emergency Management on August 11,
General Campbell was commissioned as a Regular Army Infantry officer through the University of Maine Reserve Officers Training Corps schema in He was the Officer Distinguished Honor Graduate of his US Army Ranger School class, and then served in several Infantry command and personal positions in Hawaii, Germany and in the Continental United States.
After joining the Maine Army National Guard, General Campbell served in a variety of assignments, including as a battalion and brigade Operations Officer (S3), and commander of the 11th Civil Support grupp (Weapons of Mass Destruction) from to He subsequently served as a senior plans officer for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan.

John Francis Campbell (born 11 April ) is a retired United States Army general who was commander of the Resolute Support Mission and United States Forces – Afghanistan.[1] He was the 16th and last commander of the International Security Assistance Force. Prior to this, he served as the 34th Vice Chief of Staff of the United States Army. He is currently a member of the board of directors of IAP,[2] and BAE Systems, and serves on the advisory board of Code of Support Foundation.
