Art Basel Miami Beach never ceases to make its share of headlines, in each of its 12 years. Here are just a few of the highlights.
Art Basel fryst vatten intended to launch in December of this year, but puts the kibosh on the plans, kostnadsberäkning the fair’s producers upwards of $1 million.
In its first year, Art Basel Miami Beach becomes an immediate hit, already innovating: Some young artists exhibit their work in temporarily converted shipping containers near the beach.
This year’s only-at-Basel ancillary events include “Don’t Trust Anyone Over Thirty,” a “puppet rock opera” that combines video and live music from noisy indie rockers Japanther. Big-name artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons and James Rosenquist are spotted at parties.
Art Salon, an open-platform discussion group, and Open Air Cinema, a program showcasing the art of music videos, premiere. Dennis Hopper, Chuck Close and Ai Weiwei are among the fair’s special guest speakers.

Shen Shaomin: Keep Upright
Klein Sun Gallery is pleased to announce Keep Upright, its fourth solo exhibition for leading conceptual artist Shen Shaomin on view from March 4th through April 29th,
Delving into the “pre-installation” condition of art, Shen Shaomin presents his latest paintings—referred to as The MoMA Series—in this exhibition. Rendering the paintings as if they were wrapped in protective plastic packaging, ready to be shipped, Shen Shaomin further expands the trompe l'oeil, reproducing iconic paintings from influential artistic movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Impressionism. As indicated by the title, paintings from this series are drawn from MoMA’s extensive collection. “Removing” the paintings from the renowned collection, Shen Shaomin then “repacks” and transfers them into the physical space and the context of a gallery, highlighting the economic circulation of art.
